In a major stride towards strengthening maritime security and self-reliance in defence, the Government of India has approved the acquisition of 26 advanced naval platforms, including 17 warships and 9 submarines, for the Indian Navy. This defence procurement, valued at approximately ₹2.4 lakh crore, is one of the largest modernisation drives undertaken for the Navy in recent years.
The move is aimed at enhancing India’s strategic presence in the Indo-Pacific region and securing its vast maritime interests. Most of the ships and submarines will be built domestically, giving a significant push to the ‘Make in India’ initiative and boosting indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities. This investment underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring operational readiness and technological edge for the Indian Navy.
