Chennai is reeling under heavy rainfall today, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for the city and neighboring districts. The downpour, caused by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to continue until October 17. In response, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges, and IT companies have been advised to allow employees to work from home. Waterlogging has severely disrupted traffic in several parts of the city, including Koyambedu, where residents are struggling with flooded streets and power outages in low-lying areas.
Civic authorities are actively managing the situation, deploying 990 pumps, tractors, and motorboats to address water stagnation, and public health officials are preparing for potential disease outbreaks caused by flooding. Despite these efforts, the city’s infrastructure is under strain, with several areas reporting prolonged drainage issues. As heavy rain is forecast for the next few days, officials have urged residents to remain cautious and limit travel unless necessary.
