Red Alert for Chennai: Brace for Flooding as IMD Forecasts Intense Rainfall

Chennai
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Chennai and surrounding districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours. The city is expected to experience downpours leading to waterlogging and flooding in several areas. Local authorities have initiated precautionary measures, including the closure of schools and colleges, and urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency services are on high alert to respond to any weather-related incidents, and efforts are underway to monitor vulnerable areas prone to flooding.
Chennai’s civic body has also intensified drainage clearing and stormwater management activities to mitigate the risk of flooding. With the city’s traffic infrastructure already strained by persistent rains, further disruptions are expected on key routes. The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions. Residents have been advised to stock up on essentials and stay tuned to updates from authorities.
