India,
In a major milestone for Indian maritime infrastructure, Kerala’s Vizhinjam International Seaport has processed 25,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in just two and a half months since starting limited-scale commercial operations. This figure marks 40% of the port’s targeted 60,000 TEUs for the fiscal year, emphasizing its rapid emergence as a key player in global shipping logistics. The first mother vessel, San Fernando, docked at the port on July 11, 2024, heralding the start of its commercial success.
Strategically located near global shipping lanes, Vizhinjam Seaport is primed to become a transshipment hub for South Asia, rivalling Colombo and Singapore. Recently, MSC Claude Girardet—the largest container vessel to ever berth in India—set a regional record with its 24,116 TEUs capacity, underscoring the port’s growing capacity to handle ultra-large vessels.
