The Indian Union Cabinet approved a ₹76,200 crore greenfield port at Vadhavan, Maharashtra, set to handle 298 million tonnes and create 1.2 million jobs.
The Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned the development of a greenfield deep draft port at Vadhavan, Maharashtra, with an investment of ₹76,200 crore. This strategic project will encompass nine state-of-the-art container terminals, multipurpose berths, and a liquid cargo terminal, with a total handling capacity of 298 million tonnes. Expected to generate 1.2 million jobs, the port will be developed by Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) jointly formed by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), holding 74% and 26% stakes, respectively. The comprehensive plan also includes vital road and rail connectivity, enhancing access to national highways and integrating with the Dedicated Rail Freight Corridor, facilitating seamless logistics and trade.
