Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Introduces Two Bills in Lok Sabha

On Friday, August 9, 2024, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal introduced the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2024, and the Bills of Lading Bill, 2024, in the Lok Sabha. The Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2024, aims to align with international conventions and adapt to the evolving global shipping industry. However, the introduction faced opposition from Saugata Roy (Trinamool Congress), who argued that the 1925 Act has been effective for nearly a century and that the new Bill offers only minor amendments. In response, Sonowal emphasized the need for modernization to simplify and clarify the law in line with current global standards.
