At Maraikayarpattinam in the Gulf of Mannar (GoM), 1.2 million green tiger shrimp seeds (PL 22) were sea-ranched as part of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) programme today. Staff at the Mandapam released the shrimp seeds.
Regional Center with Dr. G. Tamilmani, the project’s head-in-charge and principal investigator. Since the Project’s beginning in February 2022, 19.44 million green tiger shrimp seeds have been sea-ranched in Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar.
Dr. B. Johnson was in charge of coordinating the sea ranching initiative.
Senior Scientist of the Center, according to an ICAR-CMFRI press release. It stated that to replenish the natural stock and increase shrimp productivity, the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Mandapam Regional Centre regularly conducts sea ranching of hatchery produced green tiger shrimp, Penaeussemisulcatus seeds in the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay.
This aids in protecting and preserving a viable wild shrimp population as well as enhancing the livelihood of the local fishermen.

Due to its significance, the ICAR-CMFRI Mandapam Regional Centre is carrying out a project called “Sea ranching of Green tiger shrimp (Penaeussemisulcatus) Post Larvae (PL) in Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar with funding assistance from the Union Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying under the Central Sector Scheme component of the PMMSY. A total of 200 million Green tiger shrimp will be used in the project.
Post Larvae will be released in Tamil Nadu’s Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar region during the course of four years (2022-2026).
The project’s overall budget is Rs. 168.948 lakhs, said the release.
