Dahanu CPI(M) MLA seeks release of Maharashtra fishermen held by Pakistan

Pakistan authorities had, on Friday, said their maritime security agency arrested 16 Indian fishermen and seized two trawlers on September 27 “for being “well inside Pakistani waters”

Seven of the 16 Indian fisherman who were detained by Pakistani officials earlier this week are from the district, according to Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA Vinod Nikole of Dahanu in Palghar, who requested the help of the Maharashtra government to secure their release.

According to Pakistani authorities, two trawlers and 16 Indian fishermen were detained on September 27 for being “well inside Pakistani waters” and breaking both Pakistani law and the UN Convention of Law at Sea.

Additionally, their maritime authorities said that the detained fishermen had been given to Karachi’s Docks Police for legal requirements.

“16 fishermen were aboard the two fishing boats Pusti Krupa and Matsyagandha-9 when they were seized by Pakistani authorities. Seven come from the Palghar village in Dahanu’s Asavali. The state administration must intervene to expedite their release and treat the situation seriously “added said.

He claimed that because these fishermen frequently spend years behind bars in Pakistan, he has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde about the problem.

Rival fishermen are sometimes detained by Pakistan and India for crossing the maritime border, which is sometimes not well delineated.
