Off the coast of Latvia, where a private plane crashed under suspicious circumstances, human remains and wreckage have been discovered in the Baltic Sea. All four occupants were presumably killed in the disaster.
Four individuals that were aboard were a Cologne-based air charter company’s notable German businessman Karl-Peter Griesemann who was the pilot, his wife, daughter, and her boyfriend. The private jet was scheduled to land in Germany but proceeded to fly across Europe despite several attempts to make contact with air traffic controllers.
The Latvian civil aviation office stated, that the jet was ‘flying between Spain and Cologne but when it changed direction, air traffic controllers were unable to get in touch.’ As the Austrian-registered plane continued to fly across northern Europe, fighter jets from Germany, Denmark, and Sweden were dispatched to try to make contact with the crew in the air. However, according to Swedish search and rescue mission head Lars Antonsson, ‘they saw no one.’
Up until it got close to the Latvian coast, the plane flew rather consistently before losing altitude quickly. Just before 8:00 p.m., the Cessna 551, crashed into the water off Ventspils (1800 GMT) in the Baltic Sea.
During the search effort by Latvian coast guard vessels and underwater robots, “Remains of human beings we think to be involved with the crash,” according to Lt. Cmdr. Peteris Subbota, head of the Latvian military’s Marine Search and Rescue Coordination Center, were discovered.
