Lady Zehma Runs Aground In The Bosphorus Strait In Turkey

The Bosphorus Strait in Turkey was restricted to traffic after a ship traveling from Ukraine to Istanbul fell aground there, according to the Turkish Directorate General of Coastal Safety.

The 173-meter cargo ship LADY ZEHMA ran aground due to rudder failure while en route from Ukraine to Istanbul. Tugs KURTARMA-5, KURTARMA-6, KURTARMA-9, KURTARMA-12, NAZIM TUR, and boats KEGM-3, KEGM-5 were dispatched to the scene of the incident. Ship travel in the Istanbul (Bosphorus) Strait has been suspended, according to the watchdog’s official Twitter account.

Representatives of Ukraine, Russia, Turkey, and the United Nations inked a pact concerning the sale of Ukrainian grains, foods, and fertilizers.

According to sources, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense stated over the weekend that 1.0432 million tonnes of grain have been transferred from Ukrainian ports as part of the UN-mediated grain agreement.

Multilateral agreements were reached in Istanbul on July 22 about the easing of restrictions on the export of Russian goods and Moscow’s aid in selling grain from Ukraine.

The news that these vitally needed quantities of grain will reach the market and grain prices may once again become reasonable sent a sigh of relief to millions of people in the world’s poorer nations who face an immediate threat of famine.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, ports in the Black Sea were effectively blocked by Moscow, and Ukraine mined the area to ward off Russian strikes.

Since Ukraine is a significant exporter of grain, the price of this necessary good increased, making it unaffordable for millions of underprivileged people who were experiencing severe hunger. The ports used to export Ukrainian grain were closed to commercial ships.

Grain prices have increased as a result of the blockade. The blockade has driven up food prices even though Ukraine and Russia are two of the biggest grain exporters in the world.

Due to the blockade, Ukraine was unable to export its grains and other agricultural products, and international shippers and insurers were hesitant to enter into agreements with Russians for fear of violating US and EU sanctions.

An agreement was achieved that port infrastructure and vessels would be protected from violence after more than two months of diplomatic efforts by the UN and Turkey.

With 10% of the world’s wheat, 12–17% of the world’s maize, and 50% of the world’s sunflower oil coming from Ukraine, it is known as the “breadbasket of Europe.” The combined annual consumption of all the least developed nations is 25 million tonnes of corn and wheat.

On February 24, the Russian Federation began a “special military operation” in Ukraine that the West has referred to as an unjustified war. Western nations have also slapped a number of devastating sanctions on Moscow as a result of this.
