Overcoming obstacles caused due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Cochin Port has performed extraordinarily well in the year 2021-22. The Cochin Port has handled a record cargo volume of 34.55 million tonnes in 2020-21 registering a growth of 9.68 percent.
In container handling, it ranked fourth among all major ports by registering the highest throughput of 7.36 lakh TEUs, a growth of 6.65 per cent in 2020-21. In POL, the throughput increased to 21.07 million tonnes in 2021-22, an increase of 13 per cent over 2020-21.
These performances are testimony to the unwavering trust and support of the business by conducting nearly half a century of client outreach programs and responding positively to their needs, a press release said.
A comprehensive strategy reset resulted in the handling of new cargoes such as waste paper, wood pulp, synthetic rutile, caprolactam, acrylic acid and jute products, some of which were – through the modal shift from road to coastal shipping – of a breakthrough. The script of the story is based on the Sagarmala program of the Central Government.
An aggressive pricing strategy also helped the port achieve the highest trans-shipment container traffic of 1.56 lakh TEU at ICTT, Vallarpadam, which has contributed meaningfully to the Prime Minister’s vision of making India ‘Atmanirbhar’.
