The International Maritime Academy (IMA) in Chennai has announced a fee refund for students last week. It was reported that students with 45% of marks in class 12th PCM got into DNS, BE Marine, and BSc courses, whereas students with 60% were rejected and were not allowed to take the 2ndMates/ MEO Class IV exam.
Students who were admitted as prescribed by the university (based on the All-India Council for Technical Education-AICTE and University Grants Commission-UGC recommendation that 45 per cent PCM in 10+2 is the minimum eligibility criteria for all technical courses) are not permitted to appear for their 2nd Mate Exam for Nautical stream students / MEO Class IV examinations for Marine engineering stream students, even after completing the required sea experience. MMD officials rejected the students because they did not achieve the required 60% in PCM as recommended by the Director-General of Shipping for all Nautical and Marine Engineering students.
According to the reports, 10 batches of BTech, BSc and DNS are affected by the college fraud. IMA is one of India’s biggest Marine universities, established in 1999.
