FPSO Trinity Spirit Explodes in Nigeria, 3 Died

BY Shivani

According to the operating company, at least three people died when the oil storage and production vessel, FPSO Trinity Spirit, exploded last week in Nigeria, and four crew members are still reported to be missing.

The vessel had ten crew members on board when it exploded on Wednesday, according to Nigeria’s Shebah Exploration & Production Company Ltd (SEPCOL), and three were found dead on Sunday after three people were discovered alive last week.

“Our priority remains determining the whereabouts, safety, and security of the four crew members who remain missing,” the company said.

The Trinity Spirit floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel was not producing oil at the time of the explosion because the oilfield consortium, which included SEPCOL, had lost its production licence in 2019.

The vessel had been storing approximately 50,000-60,000 barrels of crude, well below its capacity of 2 million barrels, according to Nigeria’s environment minister on Saturday.

On Monday, the government’s National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency conducted a second aerial survey.
