On the occasion of Republic Day, National Union of Seafarer of India (NUSI) announced the “NUSI SURAKSHA KAVACH” of Rs. 25-50 lakhs insurance and 50 percent reimbursement of yearly LIC (Life Insurance Corporation Of India) regular Insurance premium as part of “Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav” and “125 years of NUSI celebrations”. The first 100 “NUSI SURAKSHA KAVACH” policy holders will receive special mementos from NUSI.
The statement issued by Abdulgani Y. Serang, General Secretary of NUSI reads, “You, me, everybody has to die one day. But, we can surely give our family members a secure future in our absence.”
The initiative benefits the members up to the age of 60 years and assures the sum of Rs. 25,00,000 lakhs on natural cause death and Rs. 50,00,000 on death due to accident. The NUSI members, who have completed the 24 months of sea service in the last five years from the date of application will be eligible for the benefits. “NUSI will nominate eligible NUSI members to LIC, which will directly get in touch with seafarers all over India to explain the procedures regarding the insurance policy.” reads the circular.
The insurance contract is said to be between the nominated members and the LIC as per the Jeevan Amar policy. LIC ensures the required medical of the members for insurance policy to be free of cost.
“NUSI wants to create more life insurance awareness and also assist our seafarers to be insured under the scheme as NUSI is with the seafarers; From Womb to Tomb- sometimes beyond.” as mentioned in the statement.
NUSI released its first circular on 1st January 2022 to announce the “NUSI SURAKSHA KAVACH” welfare initiative for the benefit of NUSI members and their families. The insurance initiative was inaugurated by Shri Amitabh Kumar, Director General of Shipping, in partnership with LIC through LIC Jeevan Amar policy.
Y. Sernag in the statement said, “It is also your personal responsibility to take insurance and publicise the NUSI initiative with other seafarers so that the future of our families is secure.”
