Frigate Bayern German warship to dock in Mumbai amid growing China’s assertiveness

By Shivani

Followed by Berlin’s 2020 strategy to uphold rules-based international order in the Indo-pacific region, a German warship is ready to deploy in Mumbai by January 21, amid China’s growing assertiveness in the region.

Recently, the Brandenburg-class frigate, the first German warship, entered the South China Sea in two decades. The showcase of the warship will depend on the Covid restriction of the place at the time.

The frigate was sent for patrolling and training mission in August 2021, as Germany wanted to uphold the activities in the region. But, China reportedly denied the entry in its Shanghai region in September, 2021.

The Frigate crossing SCS and docking up Singapore was the reprimand  to China in defiance of the unlawful maritime claims. Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schonbach, the German navy chief, made it clear that more such deployments will take place in future and Bayern’s presence is just a teaser. However, the frigate docked in many countries since last year but didn’t enter the Taiwan Strait.

In September 2020, Germany became the second European nation after France to announce the new strategy for the Indo-Pacific, highlighted the UNCLOS significance of freedom of navigation and ensured that there was no interference to maritime trade routes.
